【Brief description】The UK is considering delaying the ban on new internal combustion engine cars until 2035. The ban was originally proposed by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in November 2020, with plans to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, along with other emission reduction measures. However, the deadline of 2030 is now being reconsidered as it may be too ambitious.
The UK is considering delaying the ban on new internal combustion engine cars until 2035. The ban was originally proposed by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in November 2020, with plans to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, along with other emission reduction measures. However, the deadline of 2030 is now being reconsidered as it may be too ambitious.
According to reports, current UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce a series of "relaxed" measures on greenhouse gas emissions policies in a national speech on Friday, aimed at reducing the burden on UK households. However, the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 will not be changed.
Previously, the European Union proposed banning the production of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. This move was met with strong opposition from some car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, who criticized the ban as discriminatory against internal combustion engine cars and not adhering to the principle of "technological neutrality". Subsequently, the EU announced that vehicles using synthetic fuels can continue to be sold in 2035, thus extending the lifespan of internal combustion engines once again.
